As Samaritan’s Purse rushes critical aid to the war-torn nation, thousands of displaced families are gaining hope for a hope a better future amid uncertainty.
Since October 12, 2022, heavy rainfall in Victoria’s north has lead to historic major flooding in communities along the Murray River, particularly in Kerang, Echuca and Shepparton. Northern Victoria is enveloped by the Murray, Loddon, Campaspe and Goulburn rivers, all of which are engorged beyond threshold levels. So far one person has died and thousands of residents have either been evacuated or opted to remain stranded in their homes for several days.
The Samaritan’s Purse Australian Disaster Relief leadership team are currently in Victoria working together with local churches and community groups to assess the impact of the flood waters. This assessment is a crucial step to decide when, where and how to best respond. Samaritan’s Purse Australian Disaster Relief will provide much needed support, coordinating volunteers and relief efforts in overwhelmed communities.
“The people of northern Victoria have endured one of the biggest flood events in the state’s history. The recovery will be long, and so much help is needed. We’re looking forward to coming alongside the local churches and affected communities.”
Dan Stephens, Australian Disaster Relief Manager
